Chapter 1 of 5 · Year 4

The whisper nobody heard

Blaze surveys a fictional pyramid at dawn.
Read the story below, or press ▶ to listen

The pyramid whispered before the wind arrived. Blaze stopped beside the expedition table. Beneath it, something breathed through a crack in the sand: three low notes, then silence. She crouched. On the old survey above her, a passage ended in a room missing from the team's modern plan.

Blaze: You're hiding something.

She had expected a morning of sketches and photographs. Now she was holding her breath, waiting for a sound that should not be there.

A shadow crossed the paper. When she turned, nobody was there. Only a sharp shoeprint beside her boots. The supervisor called from the entrance. Their measuring equipment was ready. Blaze photographed the survey, then checked the water gauge. If the strange sound changed, she wanted a reading she could trust.

Year 4 Challenge 1 of 10

The team needs a starting reading before testing the air channel. What capacity does the entrance gauge show?

The man with the camera

Inside the tent, a silver-haired visitor was photographing the survey. His plum coat brushed the table. A gold sun gleamed on his calling card: Silas Vane, Extraordinary Discoveries.

Vane: A charming little mystery. Though some discoveries need someone with experience.

Blaze reached for a measuring cord. Vane's camera clicked again.

Blaze: Then you'll know why we measure before we guess.

She needed enough cord for the inspection frame and the narrow recess beyond it. Vane watched her hands instead of the map.

Year 4 Challenge 2 of 10

Blaze has 85 cm of measuring cord. The inspection frame uses 35 cm. How much cord remains?

Chapter 3 of 5 · Year 4

The door that listened

Illustration for issue 1, chapter 3: The door that listens.

At the crescent door, the whisper returned. Louder. Blaze pressed her palm against the cool stone. A groove curled along the floor towards a modern test tank. The team had fitted it to investigate the old air channel without disturbing the door.

Blaze: It isn't a voice. Something is moving air.

Something tapped on the other side. Once. Twice. The supervisor raised a hand: wait. Before the test, Blaze had to read the load on the removable frame.

Year 4 Challenge 4 of 10

Before the door test, Blaze checks the frame’s mass instrument. What reading does the pointer show?

Chapter 4 of 5 · Year 4

The label that lied

Illustration for issue 1, chapter 4: A careful experiment.
Read the story below, or press ▶ to listen

Back at the tent, the supervisor's gloved hand lifted a loose label from an instrument. Fresh glue stretched beneath it. Blaze stared. Someone had covered the original markings.

Blaze: That wasn't loose this morning.

Beyond the tent, Vane stood perfectly still. Then he turned away. Blaze wanted to follow. Instead, she checked the uncovered test gauge. An accusation needed evidence.

Chapter 5 of 5 · Year 4

A window into darkness

Illustration for issue 1, chapter 5: A mark becomes a clue.
Read the story below, or press ▶ to listen

With the equipment checked, the supervisor opened the door's inspection hatch. Blaze leaned towards the opening. Cool air brushed her face. A crescent mark waited inside, beside a passage bending into darkness. She needed the remaining cord to measure the recess.

Blaze: The missing room is real.

Year 4 Challenge 9 of 10

Blaze takes a fresh 95 cm cord. She uses 39 cm to position it at the hatch. How much remains to measure the recess?

The mystery continues

At sunset, Blaze reached for the survey. Her hand met bare canvas. The tent flap snapped behind her. On the empty table lay Vane's gold-sun card. Across its back: Some treasures need a better owner. The supervisor radioed security. Blaze opened her saved photographs. The map was still there. So was the evidence.

Blaze: He stole our route. But he doesn't know what we found.

From beneath the pyramid came three low notes. This time, something answered.

Hints and worked answers

Try each question before reading its answer.

Challenge 1

Hint: Count equal gaps, not the tick marks. The full scale is 100 L; divide it by 5 gaps.

Answer: 40 L

Each gap is 20 L. The pointer is 2 gaps from zero: 2 × 20 = 40 L.

Challenge 2

Hint: Find the difference between the whole length and the used part.

Answer: 50 cm

85 − 35 = 50. There are 50 cm left for the next check.

Challenge 3

Hint: Divide the labelled range by the number of gaps, not the number of tick marks.

Answer: 25 kg

125 ÷ 5 = 25 kg per gap.

Challenge 4

Hint: Count equal gaps, not the tick marks. The full scale is 100 kg; divide it by 5 gaps.

Answer: 60 kg

Each gap is 20 kg. The pointer is 3 gaps from zero: 3 × 20 = 60 kg.

Challenge 5

Hint: Compare the filled length with the entire tank.

Answer: 1/2

4/8 = 1/2. The filled parts occupy exactly half of the whole tank.

Challenge 6

Hint: Count equal gaps, not the tick marks. The full scale is 100 L; divide it by 5 gaps.

Answer: 80 L

Each gap is 20 L. The pointer is 4 gaps from zero: 4 × 20 = 80 L.

Challenge 7

Hint: Divide the labelled range by the number of gaps, not the number of tick marks.

Answer: 50 L

250 ÷ 5 = 50 L per gap.

Challenge 8

Hint: Multiply the number of equal groups by the number in each group.

Answer: 24

4 × 6 = 24 clips.

Challenge 9

Hint: Find the difference between the whole length and the used part.

Answer: 56 cm

95 − 39 = 56. There are 56 cm left for the next check.

Challenge 10

Hint: Count equal gaps, not the tick marks. The full scale is 100 cm; divide it by 5 gaps.

Answer: 40 cm

Each gap is 20 cm. The pointer is 2 gaps from zero: 2 × 20 = 40 cm. Vane’s claim of 60 cm does not match the scale.

Speed challenge answers

Chapter 1: Five times five equals twenty-five.

Chapter 2: Forty-two divided by six equals seven.

Chapter 3: Seven times seven equals forty-nine.

Chapter 4: Forty-eight divided by eight equals six.

Chapter 5: Nine times six equals fifty-four.
